How we calculated it

We query series gini_index of dataset cepal-social-anual (CEPALSTAT) for Costa Rica from 2000 to 2024 in VerDat's normalised layer and check that no year in the series matches or falls below the 2024 value. We require at least 15 years of series and a gap of at least 10 years. The chart reproduces the query; the values are re-verified automatically every day.

25 rows match the query; 25 results remain in the summary.

What it means and what it does not

The data come from ECLAC's harmonised series (where 0 represents perfect equality) rather than national methodology, and may differ from official domestic reports. This low describes Costa Rica's income inequality relative to its own past, but does not identify the underlying causes. Additionally, retrospective revisions to earlier years could shift the date of the record.

Every indicator is a rate, index or ratio — compare and rank, never sum. Survey years differ by country; missing years are gaps, not zeros.
